The second novel in Joseph M. Marshall III s acclaimed Lakota Western series begins ten years later, in 1875, as Sitting Bull begins gathering thousands of Lakota to face the growing problem of white incursion. What follows is a sweeping tale of the Battle of the Little Bighorn (the Greasy Grass), including the days and weeks leading up to the conflict and the remarkable defeat of General George Armstrong Custer and the 7th Cavalry. Told for the first time from the Native perspective through the eyes of Cloud, the story also weaves in the lesser-known but strategically important Battle of the Rosebud and the uncertain future that faced the Lakota following victory. Once again, Marshall infuses the story with his unique voice and eye for detail, creating a page-turning Western with a style of its own.

Marshall's 2nd Installment in the Series
"The Long Knives are Crying" is Joseph Marshall's second installment in the Lakota Westerns series. Like his first book in the series, this one is told in a retrospective fashion which I thought was a nice way to approach the story. My review on the last book in the series had mentioned a lack of maps and other background information that would have enhanced that book. There seems to have been a slight improvement in this book yet there are several occasions in which Marhsall has sites integral to the story that are not depicted on the maps included. My only other criticism is the structure of the last few chapters which detail the day of the battle at Little Big Horn. In those chapters, Marshall makes a good effort to convey that this was a large battle covering a large area yet I felt lost among the action. Perhaps some setting notes, such as "Medicine Tail Coulee" and an approximate time would have been more helpful.
Nonetheless, I found this to be an enjoyable and engaging read and I look forward to next year's book, the third in the series, "Song for the Buffalo Nation".
Different side of the story.
I love these books. I got my dad and his friends addicted! They are an easy read and you get caught up in the characters. Battle of the Little Big Horn from the Native Americans perspective.
The Long Knives Are Crying
Mr Marshalls second novel following the journey of Cloud was one of the most enjoyable books I've ever read. This book is a remarkable insight to the life of the Lakota and the trials they faced as a nation due to the whites incursion. This is a very compelling story that you'll not want to put down and will want more. It sounds like in the fall of 09 Songs For The Buffalo Nation will do just that. Mr Marshall is a masterful storyteller that weaves his story around actually historical events if you enjoy the history of the American west you'll enjoy this book told from the Lakota perspective
