![]() | Watchmen by Alan Moore
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $8.30 For the longest time, I had people telling me I HAD to read this book. I finally got around to it, and I guess everybody was right. It is such a rich and involving story surrounding complex personalities that just happen to wear costumes. I guess I'm one of those "You've got to read this" people now.
![]() | Batman: Year One by Frank Miller
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $6.00 This is the novel that remade the Batman origin story. Most people agree that it is one of the 3 greatest Batman stories ever, and it's really hard to argue with that.
![]() | X-Men: Messiah Complex by Ed Brubaker
Buy new: $19.79 / Used from: $22.95 After I finished the Astonishing X-Men series, I thought that would be the best X-Men series I would read for a long time. It didn't even last a year. Now I'll grant you there are a LOT of older series I haven't gotten to yet, but this is the best X-Men story I have ever read! The events started in the House of M lead to the birth of the mutant's last hope and the fight to control it.
![]() | Identity Crisis (DC Comics) by Brad Meltzer
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $5.33 This is the latest great novel I've recently discovered. The story revolves around the Justice League and features all of the classic heroes I grew up with. However, the great thing about this story is how it focuses on the second tier characters who are so often ignored, and is also a great mystery story.
![]() | Thor, Vol. 1 by J. Michael Straczynski
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $11.23 ONGOING. The reintroduction of Thor is given the A treatment with a great story. As someone who never really read Thor before, I was able to jump right in and will certainly be following Thor now.
![]() | Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $10.00 This is the book that brought me back to the comic world. While the artwork is not in the classic style, it completely fits the story. The story is a great mystery showing Batman as a true detective. It is also the story of how the freaks (the classic Rogues Gallery) took over crime from the mafia.
![]() | Astonishing X-Men Vol. 1: Gifted by Joss Whedon
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $2.72 SERIES GOES VOL. 1-4 Joss Whedon is the best thing to happen to science-fiction in the past decade and this series is no exception. It's perfect for someone like me as an old X-Men fan ready to start reading again.
![]() | Kingdom Come by Mark Waid
Buy used from: $7.95 A great story featuring the DC Universe of the future and a possible pending apocalypse. While the story features nearly the entire DC roster, it revolves around a much older Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The real feature to the novel is Alex Ross's artwork.
![]() | Superman/Shazam!: First Thunder by Judd Winick
Buy new: $10.39 / Used from: $4.17 A short story featuring the two most powerful characters in the DC universe and their first encounter. While the novel is very short, it quickly became one of my favorites.
![]() | Incredible Hulk: Planet Hulk by Greg Pak
Buy new: $23.09 / Used from: $17.45 As I was explaining to my wife what this book was about, even I thought it sounded ridiculous. The Hulk as a slave/gladiator on another planet? But this is hands-down one of the best Hulk stories ever told.
![]() | New Avengers, Vol. 1: Breakout (v. 1) by Brian Michael Bendis
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $2.55 ONGOING. HAVE READ VOL. 1-7 While die-hard Marvel fans greet this one with a lukewarm reception, I have really gotten into this series. It is loaded with action and is an Avengers lineup with an all-star roster that rivals DC's Justice League. Series suffers after Civil War.
![]() | Batman: Dark Victory by Jeph Loeb
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $9.50 The sequel to The Long Halloween is nearly as good as its predecessor. A great mystery story, surrounding the last days between the mob and the "freaks", and a serial killer on the loose. Also, Robin is introduced.
![]() | Young Avengers Vol. 1: Sidekicks by Allan Heinberg
Buy new: $11.24 / Used from: $1.38 ONGOING. HAVE READ VOL. 1-2 Thinking this was aimed at young teens, I had put off reading this one. Boy, what an underestimation! This was easily one of the most fun reads I had recently, along with one of my new favorite origin stories.
![]() | Superman for All Seasons by Jeph Loeb
Buy used from: $51.24 I had been wondering for a long time why nobody makes a Superman story as good as a Batman story. Apparently, they had. I just hadn't read it yet.
![]() | Justice Society of America Vol. 1: The Next Age by Geoff Johns
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $6.23 The latest incarnation of the JSA mixes the old with the new. As someone who always looked at the JSA as the B-team, I stood corrected upon finishing this great story.
![]() | Justice League of America, Vol. 1: The Tornado's Path by Brad Meltzer
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $6.74 ONGOING. The latest relaunch of the Justice League. Meltzer seems to have a signature which is to make the lesser-known heroes the centers of the story, and as such, I wouldn't change a thing.
![]() | Uncanny X-Men: Rise & Fall of the Shi'ar Empire (v. 1) by Ed Brubaker
Buy new: $19.79 / Used from: $6.98 Even though I knew very little about the events leading up to this book, this particular team of X-Men, or the history of the Shi'ar, I couldn't put this book down.
![]() | All-Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder, Vol. 1 by Frank Miller
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $8.99 Yet another origin of Robin story. Why do we need this? Because Frank Miller wrote it and it's awesome. The artwork is great and the book is near impossible to put down once you start.
![]() | Origin: The True Story of Wolverine (Wolverine: origins) by Bill Jemas
Buy used from: $1.65 A few years ago, the guys at Marvel decided to trade in decades of mystery to attempt to do justice to the unknown story of Wolverine's beginning, risking destroying the mystique surrounding their star character. Did they destroy the mystique? Yes. Was it a great story? Yes. Was it worth it? Who knows. It didn't ruin my interest in Wolverine, so maybe it was.
![]() | The Flash, Vol. 7: Rogue War by Geoff Johns
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $9.48 The Flash's story shortly following the events in Identity Crisis, and surprisingly, he seems to be a secondary character. This is far from a problem, however, since his Rogues Gallery rivals even Batman's.
![]() | Mighty Avengers, Vol. 1: The Ultron Initiative by Brian Michael Bendis
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $3.85 ONGOING. HAVE READ VOL. 1-2 The Civil War divided the Marvel universe and the Avengers. While the New Avengers continued on underground, the Mighty Avengers became the sanctioned Avengers team - with Iron Man, no less. While I like this title more than the latest New Avengers, both suffer from the absence of Captain America.
![]() | Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned by Brian K. Vaughan
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $5.49 On a recommendation from a friend, I took a break from my usual superhero stories and tried this sci-fi series. Good call on my friend's part. While the "last man of Earth" stories have been done many, many times, I thought this was a great take on it and can't wait to read the whole series.
![]() | The Death of Captain America, Vol. 1: The Death of the Dream (v. 1) by Ed Brubaker
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $5.97 ONGOING. HAVE READ VOL. 1-2 The event that rocked the Marvel Universe. I suppose the title gives away the plot, but the story holds a lot of surprises, and a NEW Captain America with a familiar face.
![]() | All Star Superman, Vol. 1 by Grant Morrison
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $7.00 A new Superman series serves as a relaunch of sorts while still combining many of the well-known elements of Superman lore. This is the one where I'd say "If you haven't picked up a Superman story in a long time, try this one."
![]() | Batman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $7.19 Widely considered one of the 3 greatest Batman stories, this is very different in feel from all others. I think I respect this book more than I enjoy it, which isn't really a bad thing.
![]() | Civil War: Wolverine by Marc Guggenheim
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $11.00 The Wolverine series that coincides with the Civil War event comic is actually better than the event comic. All the unanswered questions I had from Civil War were answered in this book.
![]() | Captain America Vol. 1: Winter Soldier, Book One (v. 1) by Ed Brubaker
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $8.99 SERIES GOES VOL. 1-2 The beginning of the Captain America run that would eventually lead to the death of Captain America. The story also introduces the Winter Soldier. Needless to say, it was great.
![]() | Justice League of America, Vol. 2: The Lightning Saga by Brad Meltzer
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.89 A follow-up to both JLA:The Tornado's Path and JSA:The Next Age, this adventure combines and divides the teams up as they try to solve a mystery involving the Legion of Superheroes. While it has less action, it reveals a lot of the teams' dynamic. Also, the one-shots at the end are fantastic.
![]() | Civil War by Mark Millar
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $13.00 The recent event series that divided the entire Marvel Universe primarily features Captain America and Iron Man, but involves all characters. Also spawned many novels featuring the Marvel characters in their own series that are worth checking out.
![]() | Captain America Vol. 5: Civil War by Ed Brubaker
Buy new: $9.59 / Used from: $4.95 Continues the Captain America storyline; however, Cap is only a supporting character in his own series, since he was starring in Civil War. Luckily, Agent 13, Falcon, and one of my new favorites, Winter Soldier kept the story plenty interesting as the plot builds up to the Death of Captain America.
![]() | Superman: Birthright by Mark Waid
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $5.25 A great retelling of the Man of Steel's origin. It covers the period after his boyhood years, but just before he takes up the mantle of Superman.
![]() | Captain America Vol. 3: Red Menace, Book One (v. 1) by Ed Brubaker
Buy new: $9.59 / Used from: $5.49 SERIES GOES VOL. 3-4 The events following Winter Soldier leading up to Civil War and the eventual death of Captain America. Action-packed.
![]() | Serenity, Vol. 1: Those Left Behind by Joss Whedon
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $4.79 While this one is almost specifically for fans of the TV show Firefly and the movie Serenity, as a lover of both, I thought this was a great story, and a perfect bridge between the two.
![]() | Wolverine: Evolution by Jeph Loeb
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $7.99 One of the most brutal stories offered up recently surrounds the ongoing battle between Wolverine and Sabretooth as it comes to a huge conclusion.
![]() | Justice, Vol. 1 by Alex Ross
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $5.50 A follow-up of sorts to Kingdom Come, with an original Justice League storyline and the incomparable artwork of Alex Ross. Story's pretty good, artwork is amazing.
![]() | Incredible Hulk Vol. 1: Return of the Monster by Bruce Jones
Buy used from: $2.50 HAVE READ VOL. 1-5 I was interested in getting back into the Hulk series. This was a good starting place. It assumes you know the Hulk's story -which most do - and jumps right into the action. Very enjoyable.
![]() | Wolverine: Origins, Vol. 1: Born in Blood (v. 1) by Daniel Way
Buy used from: $32.00 ONGOING. HAVE READ VOL. 1-5 Wolverine continues his quest to uncover his past and right some of his wrongs. Sometimes he is looking for forgiveness, other times, it's revenge. A good series.
![]() | Green Arrow: Straight Shooter (Vol. 3) by Judd Winick
Buy used from: $19.93 I finally got around to reading a Green Arrow. I probably should have started with Kevin Smith's run, but this was a good start. The story started slow, but once the action picked up, I was hooked.
![]() | House of M by Brian Michael Bendis
Buy new: $19.79 / Used from: $15.49 The Event comic a couple of years ago that changed the entire Marvel Universe. Not the best X-Men story out there, but definitely a must-read as it affects several Marvel titles.
![]() | Runaways Vol. 1: Pride and Joy by Brian K Vaughan
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.49 ONGOING. HAVE READ VOL. 1-2 Was recommended this series by a friend and although it was an entertaining read and I liked it, the book is targeted at young teens, like 13 year-old boys or girls.
