| Wilderness permits are required on the Mt. Whitney trail year-round. All overnight hikers must have a permit. All day hikers must have a permit beyond Lone Pine Lake, which is located approximately 2 1/2 miles from the trailhead. Day hikers on the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek now need a permit to go beyond Lower Boy Scout Lake. All Mt. Whitney permits are issued at the Eastern Sierra InterAgency Visitor Center south of Lone Pine. From May 1 to November 1, a limited number of permits are available. Each day, only 60 overnight backpackers and 100 day hikers may begin trips on the Mt Whitney Trail. Permits for this period may be reserved in advance, or obtained on a “walk-in” basis. Most permits are reserved during the Mt. Whitney Lottery in February. After the lottery, any remaining permits can be reserved by contacting the Wilderness Permit Office. Mt.
