Whittaker Chambers (1901-1961) was a former Communist who testified under subpoena as a witness for the House on Un-American Activities Committte (HUAC) on August 3, 1948. One of those he named, Alger Hiss, denied the allegation, leading to the Hiss Case (1948-1950). Earlier, Chambers was a senior editor at TIME magazine and editor-in-chief of The New Masses magazine and The Daily Worker newspaper. After the Case, he wrote Witness (1952) and served as a founding editor of William F. Buckley, Jr.'s National Review. He received the Medal of Freedom posthumously from President Ronald Reagan in 1984.
