![]() | Drawing Down the Moon: Witches, Druids, Goddess-Worshippers, and Other Pagans in America by Margot Adler
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $6.04 How could any list of Wiccan books not include this one. It's a classic study of Neo-Paganism well worth reading.
![]() | The Triumph of the Moon: A History of Modern Pagan Witchcraft by Ronald Hutton
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $11.93 Everyone who claims to be Wiccan should have this one on their bookshelf and have read it. As with all historians, there are various points of view and opinions, Hutton presents his and provides a good place to start, but other authors should be studied as well for a broader view.
![]() | Wiccan Roots: Gerald Gardner and the Modern Witchcraft Revival by Philip Heselton
Buy new: $31.95 / Used from: $25.49 This book was written by a Gardnerian Initiate, and explores some of the lesser known influences on Gardner such as Edward Seton's Order of Woodcrafters. It is very possible that some of Wicca's foundations came from America.
![]() | Gerald Gardner And the Cauldron of Inspiration: An Investigation into the Sources of Gardnerian Witchcraft by Philip Heselton
Buy used from: $33.88 To tell you the truth I haven't read this book yet, but if it's as well researched and written as Wiccan Roots it will be worth the purchase price.
![]() | The Pagan Religions of the Ancient British Isles: Their Nature and Legacy by Ronald Hutton
Buy new: $31.08 / Used from: $17.95 Although this book is a little outdated, it is a worthwhile read to help the student get started. The reader will see how little we know about the pre-Christian religions of Britian.
![]() | Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain by Ronald Hutton
Buy new: $17.60 / Used from: $17.84 As with "Pagan Religions...", the reader will discover what we do and don't know about how Pagan and non-Pagan religious holidays were celebrated. The draw back to this book is that Hutton only traces a tradition's age to the time it appears in writing. In many cases, when a tradition or practice appears in writing it has already been in existance for many years.
![]() | A History of Pagan Europe by Prudence Jones
Buy new: $30.73 / Used from: $10.00 This book packs a lot of information into a small space. It traces European Pagansim in all it's forms and how modern practices differ from the older practices.
![]() | Witchcraft in the Middle Ages by Jeffrey Burton Russell
Buy new: $18.90 / Used from: $1.14 This book takes a look at the history, causes, and development of what became the Witchcraft Hysteria of the late Middle Ages. It starts with the 4th century and concludes with the 15th century.
![]() | The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.97 An mythological study of various archetypes. Along with this book I also recommend Sir James Frazier's "The Golden Bough".
![]() | The Kybalion: A Study of the Hermetic Philosophy of Ancient Egypt by Three Initiates
Buy new: $14.24 / Used from: $19.29 The only introduction anyone needs to Hermetic Philosophy. IMHO, it's a must read for the novice Wiccan as Hermetic Philosophy is prominent in Wicca.
![]() | Witchcraft Today by Gerald Gardner
Buy used from: $22.24 I'm surprised by the number of Wiccan lists on Amazon that don't include any of Gardner's work. One would think that the founder's books would be some of the first ones read.
![]() | The Meaning of Witchcraft by Gerald Gardner
Buy new: $21.33 / Used from: $15.84 Another book by Wicca's founder, enough said. Along with these works I also recommend his fictional works: A Goddess Arrives and High Magick's Aid.
![]() | An ABC of Witchcraft Past and Present by Doreen Valiente
Buy new: $14.93 / Used from: $5.42 This book is laid out in encyclopedia format and contains some very useful information.
![]() | Witchcraft for Tomorrow by Doreen Valiente
Buy new: $13.22 / Used from: $10.00 A great, no-nonsense book by the mother of Wicca. I also recommend her, "Rebirth of Witchcraft" although the author was very influenced by her work with Robert Cochrane and The Clan of Tubal Cain, a non-Wiccan Witchcraft tradition.
![]() | Wicca Demystified: A Guide for Practitioners, Family and Friends by Bryan Lankford
Buy used from: $1.50 I'll admit I'm biased on this one. The author is my initiating High Priest. While aimed at the non-practitioner it would be beneficial to someone new to Wicca as well.
![]() | The Heart of Wicca: Wise Words from a Crone on the Path by Ellen Cannon Reed
Buy new: $10.36 / Used from: $4.34 The late Ms. Reed was a Wiccan after my own heart. This is what Wicca is and should strive to remain.
![]() | Out Of The Shadows: Myths and Truths of Modern Wicca by Lilith McLelland
Buy used from: $7.99 This is a great book that examines and refutes much of the nonsense found among Wiccans these days and the author does it humorously and with style. Although a serious book, you'll laugh frequently with this one.
![]() | The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Goddess: 20th Anniversary Edition by Starhawk
Buy new: $12.24 / Used from: $4.00 Contrary to popular myth Starhawk is not a Wiccan. She practices non-Wiccan religious Witchcraft, that doesn't diminish the value of her book and allows the reader to see Wicca's influences on the author. A classic gem that should be read by all Wiccans.
![]() | Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner (Includes Author's Book of Shadows) by Scott Cunningham
Buy new: $9.32 / Used from: $3.37 Think of this book as a very basic primer on Wicca. It doesn't include everything and isn't particularly in depth, but it remains a good place to start despite criticisms of it being "fluffy-bunny".
![]() | Living Wicca: A Further Guide for the Solitary Practitioner (Llewellyn's Practical Magick Series) by Scott Cunningham
Buy new: $9.32 / Used from: $2.50 A good follow up the "Wicca: A guide..". While a bit more indepth than the first book this is not an advanced book or even an intermediate book. Cunningham is about the only Neo-Wiccan author that I've read and would still recommend to help get the basics covered.
![]() | Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft (Llewellyn's Practical Magick) by Raymond Buckland
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $7.00 This is a classic must read for all Wiccans. I do wish that the "myth as fact" elements of Wiccan history were updated a little better or removed altogther in the most recent edition.
![]() | A Witches Bible Compleat by Janet Farrar
Buy used from: $3.99 This is a classic that I can't recommend highly enough. This book is a combination of "The Witches' Way" and "Eight Sabbats for Witches". The writing-style and research are outstanding and the book gives the would-be initiate a feel for what Traditional Wicca is like. I've listed two more books by the Farrars, but all of their works should be at the top of a Wiccan's "to read" list.
![]() | The Wiccan Mystic by Ben Gruagach
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.95 Given the title I was hoping it would be advanced so I purchased it with some trepidation. While I wouldn't place it in the advanced category I think it serves well as an Intermediate work.
![]() | The Study of Witchcraft: A Guidebook to Advanced Wicca by Deborah Lipp
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $8.34 Although the title states that this is an advanced book, it really isn't a "how-to" so much as it is an introduction and guide to the types of subjects an advancing Wiccan might want to look into it, and offers a well-rounded, respectable reading list at the end of each chapter. I consider this a well written, useful intermediate book.
![]() | Wicca 333: Advanced Topics in Wiccan Belief by Kaatryn MacMorgan
Buy new: $17.95 / Used from: $10.25 I've seen a number of books peddled as "advanced Wicca" and have usually found them to be nothing more than Wicca 101 books in disguise. Ms. MacMorgan has written an advanced Wicca book worthy of that title. She will get you thinking and challenge what you think you know.
![]() | Wicca 334: Further Advanced Topics in Wiccan Belief by Kaatryn MacMorgan-Douglas
Buy new: $18.95 / Used from: $22.62 This book is a follow-up and continuation of Wicca 333. The author states that these two volumes serve as a master course in Wicca and I agree with her assertion. Some might be turned off by her writing-style which is blunt and to the point; she doesn't dumbed-down or white-wash her subject matter and like Wicca 333, she will get you thinking and challenge what you think you know.
![]() | Deepening Witchcraft: Advancing Skills & Knowledge by Grey Cat
Buy used from: $9.38 This is another truly advanced work on Wicca/Witchcraft along the lines of Wicca 333 and 334. Highly recommended.
![]() | Adept Circle Magic by Kirk White
Buy new: $11.01 / Used from: $0.85 Despite the title this advanced book is more about advanced Wicca than magic. It spends a few pages revisiting the basics, but also includes advanced topics such as divine possession. Mr. White is the founder and dean of Cherry Hill Seminary.
![]() | The Witches' Sabbats by Mike Nichols
Buy new: $11.90 / Used from: $7.93 This book started out as a great website years ago. I'm glad to see the author has put the information into a book. Between this work and Stations of the Sun, the student will have a decent foundation regarding the Sabbats, but should consider other authors as well who work is reputable.
![]() | The Witches' Goddess: The Feminine Principle of Divinity by Stewart Farrar
Buy new: $23.95 / Used from: $6.98 A classic that explores several goddesses and includes rituals for each.
![]() | The Witches' God: Lord of the Dance by Stewart Farrar
Buy new: $17.21 / Used from: $6.66 The Witches' God does for the Lord what The Witches' Goddess does for the Lady. The book also includes rituals for various Deities.
![]() | Masks of Misrule: The Horned God & His Cult in Europe by Nigel Jackson
Buy used from: $27.00 This is a study of the Horned God in many of His manifestations including lesser known forms such Tubal Cain, Azazel, and Lucifer the Light-bearer, all of whom are honored in non-Wiccan Witchcraft traditions.
![]() | The Wisdom of the Elements: The Sacred Wheel of Earth, Air, Fire and Water by Margie Mcarthur
Buy used from: $6.45 This is the only book on the Elements you'll ever really need to purchase. Highly recommended.
![]() | RitualCraft: Creating Rites for Transformation and Celebration by Azrael Arynn K
Buy new: $18.96 / Used from: $3.18 If you buy only one book on ritual let it be this one. It contains everything, and I do mean everything, one needs to know concerning ritual.
![]() | The Elements of Ritual: Air, Fire, Water & Earth in the Wiccan Circle by Deborah Lipp
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $4.99 The author explains the "whys" of Wiccan ritual using the four elements as a framework. An interesting and worthwhile read.
![]() | Magical Rites from the Crystal Well (Llewellyn's Practical Magick) by Ed Fitch
Buy new: $11.01 / Used from: $0.69 Wiccan rituals developed by The Pagan Way, which served as an Outer Court for the Gardnerian Tradition in the US. Some very nice rituals.
![]() | The Pagan Book of Living and Dying: Practical Rituals, Prayers, Blessings, and Meditations on Crossing Over by Starhawk
Buy new: $14.04 / Used from: $3.95 This is another great book by Starhawk which deals with death, an often overlooked subject by most Wiccan authors. Highly recommended.
![]() | Pagans and the Law by Dana D. Eilers
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $8.99 Know your rights!
![]() | Ethics for the New Millennium by Dalai Lama
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $5.00 Don't let the fact that this isn't a book specifically for Wiccans deter you. The ethical thoughts that His Holiness the Dalai Lama presents transcend religion and will make you think about your own personal ethics.
