Product Description

Since this internationally popular book was first published, hundreds of thousands of children have learned to swim with Virginia Hunt Newman's gentle, easy to follow instructions. With the help of photographs, she shows parents exactly what to do to teach their infant to be safe in the water in a fun and playful way.

She begins with answers to the first questions parents ask: How frequent should the lessons be? How long? Will my baby forget? Will he be afraid?

Among the subjects she covers are water temperature; introducing the infant to the water; getting him used to submersion; paddling under water; encouraging him to open his eyes under water; teaching him to dog-paddle on the surface of the water; and…how to use poker chips!

She also discusses breath control, floating, kicking, pulling, jumping, diving, games that can be played in the water, and pool techniques that can be adapted for use at lakes and beaches.

The author’s simple, proven methods, including the Ten Commandments of teaching little ones, will ease parents to that wonderful moment when they watch their child splash along with self-reliance, joy, and safety.

THE BIBLE5
Teaching An Infant To Swim

by Virginia Hunt Newman

THERE IS NO EXCUSE.

Children and infant drowning is horrific and preventable. Before 2 years old, babies have no fear, holding their breath naturally when submerged. Natural bouyancy brings them to the top. With a few simple exercises guiding them to paddle, swimming under water becomes a done deal.

At 17, as a certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, I noted that West Park only offered lessons for those 6 years and older. Eagerly, I filled the gap with private lessons to children under 6 years. Unfortunately, when the Park Ridge Town Council got wind of this, I was shut down for "using a public facility for private purposes." Hum.

There are number of books out now on this topic. I even bought several to send to my children to teach their babies--both 15 months (6/15/08). None were up to my criteria; they took a slow circuitous road creating too many distractions.

In my opinion, "Teaching An Infant To Swim" by Virginia Hunt Newman is THE BIBLE. And the only reason I can see that Amazon gives it 2 stars is because is old, and that spashy newer books catch the attention of the unwary.

If you know anyone with babies or toddlers, get this book.
It's a chance to save a life.
