Not a how-to manual1
This manual is a textbook for aquatic instructors. It assumes they have participated in the YMCA aquatic training and certification program and will use this manual to tailor classes to meet their student's needs. Each chapter is devoted to one of the YMCA Youth and Adult's seven levels (polliwog, guppy, minnow, fish, flying fish, shark, porpoise) and provides sample strategies to teach personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, water games and sports, and rescue. The appendix contains drills for improving strokes and building fitness, wetball rules of play, YMCA Swim Level Logos and a list of additional resources that may be purchased.

I bought the Youth and Adult Aquatic Program Manual because I knew that the YMCA had a successful Aquatic Program and I wanted to use their method to teach myself to swim at home. I was expecting a how-to manual or at least an outline of exercises that would teach swimming fundamentals but I found neither. For this reason I rate this book 1 star. Its target audience would more than likely rate it more favorably.

For those looking to teach themselves to swim, I highly recommend Happy Laps by Terry Laughlin. This is a Total Immersion Instructional DVD.
