Mrs. Peel as gorgeously embodied by the delicious (Dame) Diana Rigg made me sit up and take notice of many things at the age of 12-13 in the summer of '66 when this show was first broadcast on u.s. tv. Black leather jump suits, karate, intelligence, beauty. Quirky, satiric, just plain fun. This series provided the template for "The X-Files."

Gritty, intelligent series about women in prison and their jailers, but it's the love story of the 1st 3 seasons that is at the heart (and secretly subversive agenda) of the show and that makes it unforgettable viewing. The glorious Simone Lahbib (Wire in the Blood) gives the stunning performance of her career as Helen Stewart, the scottish gov'nor of Larkhall prison.

After becoming hooked on season 1, u.s. fans were forced to buy region free players and send to the u.k. for dvds. It was worth it. Hopefully, the brit series will continue to be discovered as Alan Ball (Six Feet Under, American Beauty) produces an americanized version for HBO. This is landmark tv.

Includes one of the finest plays I have ever seen on tv or anywhere. Playwright John Hopkins' "Talking to a Stranger." In angry-young-man black and white. Saw this as a kid and never forgot it. It's a brit "Long Day's Journey into Night." An unflinching portrait of a marriage and family tearing each other apart. First thing I ever saw young Judi in and became a fan for life.

This series has a tendency to seem to jump the shark frequently, then re-set and go back to square one, all in a breathless style that doesn't give you time to think about how preposterous it all can be. The brilliant Peter Firth is still plugging doggedly away as the unflappable Harry, spymaster. But I'm choosing season 4 for the superb performance of Olga Sosnovska as Fiona.

The dishy Robson Green and the divine Francesca Annis are simply superb in this delightfully wicked and romantic May-December romantic romp. I loved it! One of the most entertaining films I'd seen that year.

Lovely, lovely, lovely. Gorgeous production values all round and exquisite performances from Michael Gambon, Tom Hollander, Francesca Annis, et al. A surprisingly modern p.o.v. all dressed up as a costume drama. One of the incredibly ubiquitous Andrew Davies best adaptations.

It doesn't get any better than this. Scrumptious adaptation, as with Wives and Daughters, of the obviously unjustly lesser known works of Ms. Gaskell. ("North and South," also not to be missed.) Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins are beyond splendid in this sweet, amusing, poignant, tender, loving look at everyday life at the beginning of the modern industrial era.

This racy, adult britcom boasts several of the best written and played farces I've ever seen. Amazing that the series was written and produced by a man and his mother-in-law!

The second Judi Dench series named after a classic song. More gentle romantic comedy for adults. Judi and Geoffrey Palmer are an exquisite duo. What timing, what nuance. Mr. Palmer's wonderful basset hound countenance only grows more beloved...as time goes by.

Even more outrageous than Ab Fab. Not for the squeamish. No but yes but no but yes but...computer says no. Just relax and enjoy Vicky Pollard and the only gay in the village.

Beautiful performances from Bill Nighy and the luscious young Emily Blunt who both won well deserved Golden Globes for this moving and amusing film for tv.

The first season is the best of this quirky and funny detective series featuring a mismatched odd couple.

The fabulous Robson Green, partnered by the fantastic Nicola Walker ("Ruth" from MI-5) are compelling in this dark, intense detective show. Not as grotesque as his follow-up series.

Robbie Coltrane is brilliant as the irascible police psychologist.

I know some brits find this scottish series mawkish, but I think it's great quirky fun. The characters are likeable and some great brit actors (Susan Hampshire, Richard Briers, Tom Baker, Tony Head, Simone Lahbib) spent time in Glen Bogle. The gorgeous highlands scenery alone is reason enough to watch.

A classic. Ancient roman soap opera with great performances, especially from John Hurt as Caligula and Sian Phillips as Livia.

Delightful, gentle series; love the show, love the horse riding and early aviation backdrop, love the characters, and love composer David Fanshawe's stirring score.

Dennis Potter's great series with Bob Hoskins. Filled to the brim with his signature dark humor and characters that break into lip synching old standard sunny tunes that belie the grim reality in which they find themselves. I prefer this to the much lauded "Singing Detective."

Ending on a very different note. The 2nd season of this series was disappointing, but the first is, as the critics said, "remarkable in every way." You won't see the u.s. doing a teen coming out story like this bit of fast-paced satire.
