THE EVOLUTION OF GENESIS
By an Amazon.com customer
From Genesis to RevelationFrom Genesis to Revelation by Genesis
Buy new: $28.98 / Used from: $10.86
This is one of the forgotten albums, and while the band would like to disown it, it's actually not a bad CD. The 2 disc set is the one to pick up. My favorite track is "In The Wilderness," although I think "Silent Sun" should be on greatest hits CD's and should be played live.
TrespassTrespass by Genesis
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $1.48
This is my least favorite Genesis album. While "The Knife" is a great number, the rest of the album is forgettable. This was where the band started shifting from folk to prog.
Nursery CrymeNursery Cryme by Genesis
Buy used from: $5.32
The classic line up is in place: Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks are joined by Phil Collins and Steve Hackett, and the folk is left behind for a full on prog album. "The Musical Box" is the highlight here, and one of the best Genesis songs ever recorded. Phil also makes his vocal debut on "For Absent Friends."
FoxtrotFoxtrot by Genesis
Buy used from: $3.99
"Supper's Ready" is the masterpiece from the Gabriel era - 23 minutes of mind shattering music that always leaves me breathless at the end. "Watcher of the Skies" is another classic, as is "Horizons," though I've never cared much for the other tracks.
Genesis Live [Definitive Edition Remaster]Genesis Live [Definitive Edition Remaster] by Genesis
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.94
A rather forgetable live album. The songs all sound better on the albums. Worth buying to hear "The Knife" performed by the classic line-up.
Selling England by the PoundSelling England by the Pound by Genesis
Buy used from: $4.30
The best album of the Gabriel era, filled with classics like "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight," "I Know What I Like," and my favorite from this CD, "Firth of Fifth." Includes another Collins vocal (and shades of things to come) with "More Fool Me."
The Lamb Lies Down on BroadwayThe Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis
Buy used from: $9.98
Not a bad album, but not as good as "Selling England By The Pound." Has some classic songs on it, but the story the songs are built around is flat and uninvolving. Highlights include "Carpet Crawlers," "In The Cage," and the title track.
A Trick of the TailA Trick of the Tail by Genesis
Buy used from: $3.93
Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis was the best thing that could have happened to the band. Where else were they going to go after "The Lamb"? Phil steps out from behind the drums and delivers prog classics like "Squonk," "Los Endos," "Entangled," and the title track. So beginnith the second chapter of Genesis...
Wind & WutheringWind & Wuthering by Genesis
Buy used from: $3.69
Though I never thought this was the masterpiece many fans believe it is, it does have my favorite Genesis song, "Afterglow." Otherwise "One For The Vine" is good but the other songs I have a hard time remembering.
Seconds OutSeconds Out by Genesis
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $9.45
The best of the live albums, this would be the last time we'd hear Steve with the band. Phil does his best to please everyone, not only delivering songs from the last two albums but giving us classic renditions of "I Know What I Like," "The Lamb," the entire epic "Suppers Ready," and a twist on a classic song, "Carpet Crawl." Not Crawlers - Crawl.
And Then There Were ThreeAnd Then There Were Three by Genesis
Buy used from: $4.08
This was the weakest of the Collins era albums, with the absence of Steve Hackett leaving a hole in both the writing and the sound that no one was ready to fill. "Undertow" is a nice song, but my favorite here is the big hit track, "Follow You, Follow Me."
GENESIS - DUKE (RMST)GENESIS - DUKE (RMST)
Buy used from: $3.60
Even Gabriel era fans love this album. "Turn It On Again," "Misunderstanding," "Duchess," and the "Duke" numbers are just a few of the tracks to highlight this amazing turn around. The prog is almost forgotten, just in time for the 80's.
AbacabAbacab by Genesis
Buy used from: $1.72
Here's where the divide begins, and I have to say its a dumb one. Prog fans complain that Genesis develops into a popular band at this point, hit singles filling the radio. But prog was dead, and Genesis did not sell out but instead evolved. "Keep It Dark" and the title track are my favorites.
Three Sides LiveThree Sides Live by Genesis
Buy used from: $6.61
Another great live album to show off a new "classic" line-up, the addition of Chester Thompson and Daryl Sturmer as live performers. The "In The Cage" medly makes its debut, and Phil sings it better than Peter. Yes, I said it.
GenesisGenesis by Genesis
Buy used from: $0.85
Not their best album, but even when they weren't at their best they manage to crank out the classics "Mama" and "Home By The Sea." And yes, I enjoyed the beginning of the pop days. "That's All" is catchy.
Invisible TouchInvisible Touch by Genesis
Buy used from: $0.01
The POP album, the one hated by most. But the title track is one of my favorite Genesis numbers, and they manage to bring a bit of prog into the 80's with "Domino." The hits just kept on coming, and I loved them all.
We Can't DanceWe Can't Dance by Genesis
Buy used from: $0.01
Not as good as I remember it, but still a great album. "No Son of Mine" is the highlight here, but I also loved "Driving the Last Spike" and thought "I Can't Dance" was the most fun song I'd ever heard. "Fading Lights" swells, and Phil exits stage right.
Genesis Live: The Way We Walk, Vol. 1 (The Shorts)Genesis Live: The Way We Walk, Vol. 1 (The Shorts) by Genesis
Buy new: $8.96 / Used from: $0.01
The hits... Live. This was my introduction to Genesis, and a fine intro it was. "I Can't Dance," "Invisible Touch" and a fun "Throwing It All Away" are the highlights.
Live: The Way We Walk VOLUME TWO: THE LONGSLive: The Way We Walk VOLUME TWO: THE LONGS by Genesis
Buy used from: $0.28
The classics... LIVE! The "Old Medley" is the reason to buy this CD.
Calling All StationsCalling All Stations by Genesis
Buy used from: $0.35
Enter one of the most abused singers in music history. Ray Wilson did a fine job filling the vocal duties here, and he was left to twist in the wind by both Mike and Tony and the fans. The best song here is "Congo." I also have a 2 disc live CD of Ray with Genesis performing all the hits.
Turn It on Again: The HitsTurn It on Again: The Hits by Genesis
Buy used from: $0.72
My big complaint here is with "Carpet Crawlers 99." I love it, its the best version of the song out there, but what about that missing section after Phil sings...? That was where Ray Wilson recorded his contribution, and it was cut out. What the hell is up with that!?
Genesis Archive, Vol. 1: 1967-1975Genesis Archive, Vol. 1: 1967-1975 by Genesis
Buy used from: $26.63
I don't own this, I didn't see the point. I downloaded all the b-sides, I've got three discs worth from each of Genesis' lead singers. Peter's b-sides were the weakest.
Genesis Archive #2 1976-1992Genesis Archive #2 1976-1992 by Genesis
Buy new: $49.98 / Used from: $19.31
Again, I don't own this. Why bother? They don't include all of Phil's b-sides and none of Ray's. They must really regret hiring Ray. I wish they'd done at least 2 more albums with him and an official live CD.
Turn It on Again: Tour EditionTurn It on Again: Tour Edition by Genesis
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $3.03
This was just put out to make money off of the new tour. Still, I find it interesting several b-sides were included here. I especially like "Inside and Out."
Platinum Collection GenesisPlatinum Collection Genesis by Genesis
Buy used from: $4.50
If you want to get into Genesis, start here. While "Calling All Stations" is the only Ray Wilson song included (WHY?), "From Genesis to Revelation" is excluded all together. The next CD to buy will be the official bootleg of the LA concert, which I can't wait for!!! Greatest... band... ever!
Live Over Europe 2007Live Over Europe 2007 by Genesis
Buy used from: $17.39
As I said, I was at the Hollywood Bowl Show (it poured rain and the encores were canceled sadly), and while Genesis does still kick a** I find myself longing for new material. This live CD marks the seventh album released since "Calling All Stations" (Starbucks released a CD called "14 From Our Past"), and there's only so many ways to repackage old material.
Genesis 1976-1982Genesis 1976-1982 by Genesis
Buy new: $77.97 / Used from: $50.61
This looks as if it will be the ONLY complete, and therefor worthy, box set of the 3 being released. Has all the albums, all the videos, all the b-sides. However, the failure to include "Seconds Out" and "Three Sides Live," or to provide fans with a 4th box set for the live albums and plenty of never released live material, prevents me from buying any of these sets.
1983-1998 Box Set 5CD/5DVD1983-1998 Box Set 5CD/5DVD by Genesis
Buy new: $58.47 / Used from: $36.98
Where are the rest of the "Calling All Stations" b-sides? Where are the live cuts of Ray performing classic Genesis songs? I have all of these on bootlegs, why would I bother with a box set that doesn't provide me with EVERYTHING available? As for the next set, with the PG stuff, wheres "From Genesis to Revelation?"
Genesis Box Set 3 (1970-1975)[13 Disc Set]Genesis Box Set 3 (1970-1975)[13 Disc Set] by Genesis
Buy new: $82.97 / Used from: $219.45
The Gabriel era, repackaged with DVD's and plenty of bonus material. However, with a 2 disc set of "From Genesis to Revelation" already available, why not just include it. I know they don't have the rights, but how hard could it be to get permission to include their debut album?
14 From Our Past14 From Our Past by Genesis
Buy used from: $0.01
I bought this because I'm a completist, but this is totally worthless for anyone who already owns the albums of any of the greatest hits packages. Interesting inclusions are "Happy the Man" and "Your Own Special Way."
Genesis Live 1973-2007 (8 CD/3 DVD)Genesis Live 1973-2007 (8 CD/3 DVD) by Genesis
Buy new: $101.99 / Used from: $87.95
This is a frustrating set. The real draw would have been hearing Ray sing classic Genesis songs, or Phil covering "Moon-lit Knight" and other classics. What do we get? Not much. They don't even include "Live Over Europe," they just leave an empty slot for it. Cheap.
Live in PolandLive in Poland by Genesis
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $12.39
The Ray Wilson tour finally comes out as an unofficial bootleg with poor sound quality. You won't be able to download anything better, so this is as good as it gets. Worth it to experience what might have been.
