Great protection, few caveats...
I've owned this case since the Palm Pre launched on June 6th. For anyone considering the phone, it's awesome. Get one.

Back to the case... I like:
1) Its quality construction
2) Tight fit on my belt (no dangling, here).
3) The felt inside parts do well to protect my Pre at all times.
4) It comes with a pull-up ribbon that raises your Pre up for you to grab out of the case. Nifty.
5) It still fits my Pre with its clear screen protector attached. (Highly recommended as the Pre's screen is plastic and WILL scratch if you're not careful.)

A few minor gripes...
1) It's a bit TOO snug in there. If you have any other cases or a larger extended battery, the phone won't fit. Even without any of that, sometimes getting the Pre in and out of the case takes some doing. The pull-up ribbon helps, but it dangles out of the case like a dog's tongue when you do so, which looks silly. Once you put the Pre back in, the "tongue" goes away.
2) There is NO opening for a headphone jack. You CANNOT plug in headphones while the phone is in the case.
3) Speaker is covered, so ringer/notifications get muffled.
4) Per instructions, the Pre should ideally be inserted into the case with the screen facing your hip. This takes some minor getting used to but actually works great because when taking the Pre out you invariably hit the power button and by the time it's in your hand, it's fired up and ready to go.

looked nice, performed horribly!
I didnt buy this from Amazon but I want to give a heads up for those considering it. I used this case for 1 day! (or shall I say a few hours since I bought it at night). I was planning to return it the next morning anyway, then the stupid ribbon ripped out! There was no "abuse", just a simple pull to remove the phone (which I almost dropped several times!) This is a terrible design. I like to have genuine accessories but its sad when the aftermarket makes the OEM option look like a toy! I have since replaced this with the Seidio case/holster combo and couldnt be happier! (the Seidio was bought from Amazon by the way and was a GREAT deal as well as a great buying experience!

Palm Leather Side Case for Palm Pre
Not a very well designed product. The Pre fits so snugly that it's hard to remove when a call is received, even when the little "tongue" is used. Also, because it almost surgically seals the phone it is hard to hear when it rings. Used this product for two weeks and ended up buying a generic case that works perfectly. I can now hear the phone ringing, and I can remove it from the case without struggling to find the strap.
