Editorial Reviews
From Library Journal
Heinerman, the author of nine books on health (e.g., Heinerman's Encyclopedia of Healing Herbs and Spices, Prentice Hall, 1995), capitalizes on the recent resurgence of interest among pet owners in the holistic and homeopathic treatment of disease. While he is a renowned medical anthropologist and expert on the healing properties of plants, Heinerman is not a veterinarian, and he quotes at length from authorities like Richard Pitcairn (Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats, Rodale, 1995). There are glaring mistakes in the text ranging from the trivial (Lassie was a Rough Collie, not a Border Collie) to the serious (diethylcarbamazine is a preventative for heartworm, not a cure?if given to a dog with heartworms, it could kill). Heinerman does not believe in spaying or neutering since it "deprives animals...of the emotional joys associated with giving birth and parenting," but he fails to address the health benefits of those procedures or the fate of unwanted offspring. If your library needs a book on alternative veterinary care, purchase Pitcairn. Not recommended.?Florence Scarinci, Nassau Community Coll. Lib., Garden City, NY

Dog and Cat Care the Natural Way
Good overview, but doesn't have a lot on how to keep a dog healthy...just cures for common problems. This is a good reference, and I'm glad I have it in my library. Very good reference if you don't wish to use pharmaceuticals on your animal. Excellent for people just beginning to use natural care for their animals...
A Good Book
I bought this book to use for a college course even though the reviews were poor. I found this book to be helpful. It had some different alternatives to the usual holistic and natural cures. Give this book a try.
A good book for your natural pet care library
This book is one of 4 books that I have on natural pet care. I refer to it along with all the others every time I need guidance. I have found it useful for some health issues, and will continue to reference it in the future. I always cross-reference the advice against my other books, then make a decision based on my own gut instinct as to what's best for my animals.
