Grade 10 Up-Beginning with brief descriptions of these body modifications, followed by their place in history, Winkler covers the process of selecting and having a tattoo or piercing done. She outlines health risks and encourages readers to choose a professional rather than do the job themselves; much of the information about selecting an artist is good. Unfortunately, the firsthand quotes sprinkled throughout are mostly from people who are 18 or older. Almost midway through the book, Winkler mentions the important fact that tattooing is illegal in most states for people under 18. Although several good points about health hazards are mentioned and the text is well organized, it does not go deeply enough into the negative aspects of tattooing and body piercing.
