| Many times, novice astronomers are goaded into or feel like they have to buy a telescope that has all the 'bell and whistles' or ensures them of the highest possible magnifications. Of the three things important to telescopes and optics: aperture, magnification and resolving power, the least important is magnification. How many times have you been to a discount store or warehouse club and seen those boxes of telescopes with stunning color pictures of galaxies or nebulae on them touting 450x power? Don't waste your time or money on such junk. Get a telescope that has the most aperture you can afford and is simple to operate. This way you will get more bang for your buck and have time to learn the sky instead of trying to figure out some computerized gadget scope. The 'Dobsonian' mounted or Alt-azimuth reflector telescope is a great choice for beginning astronomers. | ||
