Product Description

Grasshopper spends a lot of his time...leaping! He encounters many critters along his way and never pays much attention to them. When he sees a big black cat he realizes he may be in trouble and has to figure a way out of his dilemma. The story is written delightful rhyme and the illustrations are in bright eye catching colors. Children, ages two to five will find the critters very appealing as they come alive on each and every page.

A Lesson in Friendship and Bravery5
Leaping Grasshopper tells his story in easy to read rhyming sentences that capture the imagination of the very young, the preschool toddler, and the beginning reader.

Jeanne Archambault's delightful narrative is accompanied by Dwight Smith's illustrations. These pictures depict the critters Grasshopper leaps over as he hurries through the day. He does not stop to say "hello" or get their names.

Grasshopper ignores, beaver, birdie, mole, bunny, ladybug, squirrel, butterfly, and piggy. Suddenly faced with the glowering scowl of a big black cat, He becomes afraid. His calls for help go unheeded. Bravely, he speaks to the cat. Soon they are playfully enjoying each other. Grasshopper realizes he has missed friendship by leaping over others and determines to slow down and be a friend to everyone.

I enjoyed the flowing rhythm, the vibrant colors of the illustrations, and the lessons on overcoming shyness and taking time to make friends with others to help them in time of need.

"Leaping Grasshopper" encourages visualizing, and a creative imagination. Even the youngest toddler will soon be looking at the pictures and verbalizing their own story line.

This is a beautiful book for gift giving, for the home nursery and for preschool libraries.
