An upbeat children's picturebook
Dizzy is an upbeat children's picturebook about Dizzy, the world's fastest dolphin, so speedy he can leap out of the water and clear a full gainer reversed with a spin. Singsong rhyming verse and wild, flowing color illustrations embellish this amazing sea adventure brimming cover to cover with enthusiasm and zest for life. "Circling around in a victory loop / Dizzy Caught sight of a fast racing sloop. / 'Let's bow surf that ship coming out of the cove!' // He squawked to friends / as he arched... / and then dove." The final page of this enthusiastically recommended picturebook presents young readers with some basic questions and answers about dolphins in general and Pacific white-sided dolphins such as Dizzy in particular.
Busy, busy Dizzy the Dolphin teaches about sea animals
"It's a bird. It's a torpedo. No...wait, it's Dizzy, the world's fastest dolphin."
Adventure in the ocean awaits your child as they follow a very busy go-for-it dolphin named Dizzy.
Author Stacy Nyikos is an award-winning writer, musician and parent. She began writing poetry in college, but didn't get into children's literature until she finished her Ph.D.
Some of Nyikos' language will keep the parent/reader challenged to explain to the child words that will expand their vocabulary--words such as "plummeted, full gainer, speedster, and bellowed--and that certainly is good.
The incredibly wonderful illustrations by Kary Lee have as much movement and color as Dizzy, the busy dolphin. The other aquatic animals (otters and sea lions) are each worthy of their own book. I suspect the children will love the adorable sea otters. Lee has incorporated the words into the design and some go in circles while others fly along with Dizzy.
Nykios' rhyming poetry is also so full of energy that I didn't realize it was rhyming until my second read.
The storyline is that Dizzy visits with his ocean friends as he flips and flops, spins and slices, plummets and circles, arches and zips through the water. After a day of all-out play, he was tired--until someone told him about fresh fish in the area.
At the back, an entire page of "Dolphin Delights" educates child and parent alike. You learn what they like to eat, where they live, what they do and much more.
Third in a series of stories of aquatic life, Dizzy follows Squirt, about squid and Shelby, featuring a shy lemon shark (see our review). Both of her previous books have received honors. Her next book, due in 2008, is a children's novel, Dragon Wish (by Blooming Tree Press).
Armchair Interviews says: If your child does not already know about aquatic animals, this book will give them an lot of new information presented with great fun.
A book for marine lovers
Reviewed by Stephanie and Parish (age 3) Rollins for Reader Views (3/07)
Dizzy is a dolphin. He likes performing tricks. "Dizzy" is written in rhyme. Throughout "Dizzy," the dolphin interacts with other animals, and he notices the environment around him.
Parish liked to "read" this book upside-down for some reason. That was challenging. "Dizzy" did not hold her attention. I found it to be a bit drab, also. I am sure that there are some children that are really excited about dolphins and the ocean. Parish is not one of them.
"That is a dolphin." I point to Dizzy. She does not respond. She flips pages.
"Do you like this book?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"I don't know."
"Do you want to keep it or give it away?"
"Give it away."
I left it on the family room floor for a few days to see if she would pick it up. She did not. "Dizzy" is not attention-grabbing.
Older children who like marine life may find "Dizzy" enjoyable. Most of the words are easy to sound out for beginning readers. Overall, I do not recommend it.
