Editorial Reviews
Review
After spending some time in Louisiana, I have come to the conclusion that
Louisiana born cooks have an innate ability to make everything they touch
taste delicious. Peggy Sholly is a good example. Peggy has covered every kind
of Louisiana, Tex-Mex, Italian and American food in her cookbook, Down Home
Delicious. If you want Beef Hash you can have it, and if you want Deluxe Prime
Rib, you can have that too. I don't believe that she has left a single
delicious recipe stone unturned! Cornbread dressing, BBQ Baked Beans, and
Italian Meatballs, Vintage Mexican Enchiladas…delicious, delicious, delicious.
You won't find a better example of the melting pots of Louisiana and Texas than Peggy's wonderful book. Lagniappe is also included in the book. You know…just a little something extra such as a list of pantry items, canned goods and
substitutions as well as some history of foods in the cookbook.
It's a wonderful book, try it, and let Peggy know how much you love it.
Excuse me now, I'm on my way to devour Grandma's Fig Cookies from Peggy's
recipe on page 201. --Linda Weiss, Food Editor, South Carolina Homes & Gardens Magazine, Author- Memories from Home, Cooking with Family & Friends
Down Home Delicious is a great book for those just attempting to cook for the first time or for the seasoned cook. I love the variety it offers from Peggy s Italian heritage to good ole TexMex with a good amount of Louisiana mixed in. Its recipes are written from the soul and have character to them. Food is about the soul and Down Home Delicious is certainly soulful. --Executive Chef Randy Evans, Brennans of Houston, Texas
This is real comfort food. As a clinical psychologist who treats people who emotionally overeat, I always tell my patients, if you are going to eat to cope, eat only the best and really enjoy your food - make an occasion of it and relish every bite! Inside Peggy's cookbook are truly the best versions of our all time favorites. This is the best, its real comfort food and you can find it at the downhomedelicious website. --Sheila H. I can't stop coking the recipes - they are that good!
I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of this book and the recipes are amazing. I'm typically not a "cook" but after doing a few of these recipes for my husband, he just keeps asking for more!Even he made the meatloaf by himself (a feat just to get him in the kitchen) and he asks for it a few times a month!
most mouth watering flavors you have ever put in your mouth
"Down Home Delicious brings passion into cooking. For the first time ever I fell silent at the dinner table in order to savor every bite. Here you will discover the most mouth-watering flavors you have ever put in your mouth. You'll look forward to cooking them all, over and over again."
Old Favorites Done With a Special Touch
I received this cookbook as a Christmas gift, and thoroughly enjoyed the first step of simply kicking back in the recliner for a fun read. This book is full of good old American favorites from Italian, Cajun, and Tex-Mex traditions, but it also has quite a few recipes that are new to me as well. They all have Ms. Sholly's special touch, yet are do-able enough for the average cook.
The second step (trying a recipe in my own kitchen, of course) was just as fun. I tried her pot roast and it was delicious! My husband couldn't stop raving about it. The beef broth we had leftover from cooking the roast was so flavorful and made wonderful beef stew later on.
I am eager to try her seafood recipes and her Italian "suga" (tomato gravy), as these are areas of cooking in which I have little experience. Her enthusiasm for cooking her heart out for those she loves is infectious. I can tell already I'll be referring to this cookbook frequently.
