Customer Reviews
A nice introduction to a great writer
I've never read anything by Paulo Coelho before, so I was rather surprised by the pagan spirituality of this little novel. It's the story of Brida, an Irish girl in training to become a witch. It is full of beautifully worded prose--I found myself making little tics and stars beside many paragraphs to go back and examine again (my apologies to those who get the ARC from me, lol). There is some seriously high minded spirituality folded into this simple book about a woman's quest to learn to use her powers and her heart. I was especially intrigued with the Catholic Christianity woven within the more traditional magical teachings and philosophies. This is, apparently, one of Coelho's earlier works that has finally been translatted from the original Portuguese. I found it a good way to whet my appetite for his other works before I come to a decision of what it is I think of him as a writer.
Magic and Mystery of Love
Paulo Coelho was written a beautiful narrative about a young woman, Brida, who is in search of her purpose, or path in this life. She must make decisions; strive to understand new revelations and struggles against herself before realizing that life in its simplicity is difficult but beautiful. That life is supposed to be Mysterious. That Soul Mates are possible and necessary. Somehow, Paulo is able to pull these wonderfully poignant gems about love and life into words--there is an art to his writing. This book makes me feel like I am reading a sculpture about LOVE. Coelho captures the essence of the archetypal connections with graceful ease. For example, he describes the life of a ancient soldier/warrior: "They know they could die at any moment, and that's why, for them life is one long celebration." And bringing tears to my eyes, his description of the LOVE this same soldier feels for his woman, this Brida (Loni)was so powerful that,"...despite all the women he had known, only there in her arms could he close his eyes and sleep like a child." He grasps the delicate intricacies of love and the human compulsion to find one's Soul Mate. He is also masterful in his ability to weave Christianity and other traditions together in such a way that you can not untangle them with your modern mind. Paulo must certainly have some experience with these things--his own life must be reflected somewhere in here, in his stories, for them to be so powerful and artfully detailed.Waiting for Odysseus
Fala Portuguese
Paulo Coehlo is one of my favorite authors with The Alchemist being my favorite book. I am sure that Brida is another fantastic work, however, I do not speak Portuguese and the pre-order that i received was not translated to English. Be careful when ordering to select the appropriate language.
