Product Description

ARE YOU A PEOPLE HELPER?

Virtually anyone with a desire to help others can be a people helper, says noted Christian psychologist Dr. Gary Collins, but often those Christians who feel most called to counsel are unsure of how to use the Bible to ease another person's problems.

The Biblical Basis of Christian Counseling for People Helpers will guide you to a practical, working knowledge of Scripture and the basics of the Christian faith-the core of what Christian counselors must know to be truly effective in helping others.

"Most of the problems we encounter in counseling are far too diverse and complex to be solved by quoting a Bible verse or by applying some pat biblical formula," writes Dr. Collins. "But certainly the Bible, God's revelation, gives a number of specific directions and many clear principles that can give us a framework for counseling and can form the basis of our Christian worldview."

If you need expert guidance in how to best guide others, turn to Gary Collins. And let The Biblical Basis of Christian Counseling equip you to serve faithfully as a Christian people helper.

Editorial Reviews

Review
This is a comfortable, intimate book to read. Highly recommended for 'people helpers' who are seeking strong spiritual guidelines in their work. (Off the Shelf, Spring 1995)

Very impressed, particularly good for Christian counselors without a theology background. -- Dr. Austin Stouffer, Christian Info News, January 1995

Customer Reviews

Impractical, preachy and limited1
I found this book of relatively little value. I suppose if you spend sessions processing demons, angels and satan, then it will be something you want to get your hands on. It read like a theological diatribe instead of a Christian counseling book and I felt Collins was more interested explaining his theological positions than writing a book on counseling that allows for counselors to apply Christian therapy in a realisic manner. Also, I experienced it as extremely defensive as Collins spent a great deal of energy pointing out what is wrong with other religions and beliefs instead of sticking to the title of the book. If you are a rigid, fundamentalist, convervative Christian counselor, and your clients are all the same, this may be for you. If you are anything but, or if your clients differ, I would skip right over it. I suggest instead Psychology, Theology & Spirituality in Christian Counseling by Mark, R. McMinn, Ph.D. It is much more practical, useful and realistic and you can pull from it and apply it to your counseling with a wide range of Christian clients in all their diversity.
