Books I Still Think About Years Later
By an Amazon.com customer
A Prayer for Owen MeanyA Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I read this book for a college lit class ten years ago and find myself thinking about it nearly once a week: how the characters were alive, how the town felt when you walked down its street, how the end came out of nowhere and yet had been whispered on every page.
My Name Is Asher LevMy Name Is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.03
I fell in love with Potok when I read The Chosen, but My Name Is Asher Lev is the book I think about when I look into my sons' eyes, when I think of my mother, when I write stories for literary magazines and not my religious community. This book struck a nerve. I still see Asher looking up at his ceiling from his bed, working in his studio, at his first event. I miss him.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6)Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $4.11
I loved all of this series but book five was so depressing, I thought I might not make it through six and seven. Then this one came along and I couldn't put it down. I read late into the night and then re-read half of it - YES HALF!
Taliesin (The Pendragon Cycle, Book 1)Taliesin (The Pendragon Cycle, Book 1) by Stephen R. Lawhead
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I read this book way back in Jr High, but the world of Lost Atlantis and the drama that unfolds still comes to mind often and stirs my creativity.
House of the SpiritsHouse of the Spirits by Isabel Allende
Buy used from: $74.95
I read this book a few years ago after sinus surgery. The fact that I can remember it at all through the haze of medication is miraculous in itself. Allende's story is mesmerizing and I still find myself picking up the book and rereading passages that were beautiful and thought provoking.
Fierce: A MemoirFierce: A Memoir by Barbara Robinette Moss
Buy new: $20.52 / Used from: $3.67
I read this book this summer after meeting the author at a book festival. This is a personal memoir that lives up to its name. Barbara Robinette Moss shows no fear in examining her life. Her characters are both endearing and hateful; you feel the humidity of the south in her prose; you taste the tears and smell the terpentine. I think of her when I need strength.
Daniel Deronda (Penguin Classics)Daniel Deronda (Penguin Classics) by George Eliot
Buy new: $7.92 / Used from: $0.09
I read this book seven years ago and recently ran across the movie version while channel surfing. With only seconds of the show in front of me I instantly recognized the book and made my husband go back. I had relived those scenes of conflict and struggle. I knew them as if I had lived them.
