About the Author
Mercer Mayer – writer and illustrator for Little Critter First Readers, as well as Little Critter Spectrum began writing and illustrating children’s books in 1966 and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Open almost any of the award-winning author/illustrator’s books, and out may pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters.
“Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid,” says Mercer. “Now that I’m a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like.”
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his home. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completion of his studies, he set out with pen and ink to write and illustrate a collection of children’s book, reflecting many of the adventures he experienced as a child.
Customer Reviews
Great Book!
I own a few of the Spectrum series books. These are great and packed with a lot of activity worksheets. These books cover all aspects of the FCAT testing and make for great student practice.
Even with shipping the price through Amazon can be lower than the education stores.
Very Rote, Not Creative.
Each topic of study has a two-page spread. Today my son is studying statements and commands, sentences that start with a capital letter and end with a period. The first page has a brief overview and some instructions, and then a paragraph which kids must edit for capitalization and periods. On the second page, children decide whether sentences are statements or commands, and then at the bottom of the page they write one statement and one command of their own. Both pages are about a lemonade stand. There is a color graphic of lemonade in the corner.
While these activities do give kids practice with the target skill, they are not at all interesting. Amazon here has an "about the author" saying that the author is Mercer Mayer. He is no longer the author. He had clever, witty paragraphs, poems, stories that kids could work with. Now the topics are somewhat boring for kids.
My son has trouble telling where one section ends and another starts; there is no demarcation between directions and activities.
This workbook will help kids prepare for standardized tests, but it will not give kids a love for language. Come back, Mercer Mayer!
Great Book!!!
It is a great grammer review book. I bought to keep my son busy and in touch with study during summer. Even though sometimes he complaint that why he has to do it...:) I like the book as it explains rules so he can fully understand the concept!!!
