NJ ASK FAQ:
NJ ASK Frequently Asked Questions
What is the NJ ASK?
It is an assessment based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. It is administered
in all New Jersey public schools. With the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act, it is administered
every year to all children in grade 3 through 8. Students in Grade 3 are tested in Mathematics and Language Arts Literacy. NJ ASK scores are reported as scale scores in each content area.
The scores range from 100-199 (Partially Proficient), 200-249 (Proficient) and 250-300 (Advanced
Proficient).
When is the NJ ASK given?
It is normally administered in the spring. Please obtain the exact dates of your test from your
school.
What is the format of the NJ ASK?
The NJ ASK consists of multiple choice and open-ended questions for the Reading tasks and Writing tasks. In multiple choice questions, students are expected to select the best answer out of four choices. For open-ended questions, students are asked to construct written responses, in their own words. For the writing tasks a writing situation will be given and questions will asked accordingly. The students are expected to write an answer in their own words. Each test section needs to be completed in the allotted time. Test administrators ensure that students adhere to the test guidelines.
What is the duration of the test?
Grade 3 students take the NJ ASK over a four day period. The first two days are devoted to the Language Arts Literacy test and the final two days are used for the Mathematics test. On each of the test days students spend from 60 to 100 minutes working on the test.
Where can I get additional information about the NJ ASK?
