About Us
Today's Avid Reader Is Tomorrow's Honor Student As a child I read everything. Campbell soup cans, cereal boxes, comic books, grit newspapers, the Poor John's Farmer's Almanac, and my older brother's school books. I didn't just like to read. I had to read. Reading was my escape and a means of survival. We lived on a farm in a very rural area of North Carolina. My father was not an easy man, neighbors were miles apart and my Dad's reputation preceeded him. We didn't have sleepovers My friends were most often found between the pages of books. My sisters saved their pennies for candy and I saved mine for books. As an 8th grade English teacher, I was once reprimanded for allowing a young man to use an X-men comic book for his book report. After reading the student's concept of how descrimination and violence against people who are different will someday destroy the world, the supervisor relented. He examined the paper and the comic book. It was a very well written theme paper, not just a book report. Our goal is to help increase the number of students graduating from high school and going on to college.
