Michael Manning's Review of "Time Out" by Buddy Rich!
Finally, Buddy Rich fans will revel in this fine recording of "The World's Greatest Drummer" featuring his arrangement of composer Bud Powell's "Bouncing with Bud" recorded "live" during the late 1970's. It's hard not to chuckle hearing the highly energized task master Rich in the background yelling out to long-time tenor sax man Steve Marcus: "Alright, folks. What do we have up next?" Marcus replies: "Bouncing with Bud!". Rich sarcastically replies: "Oh, that's nice" and immediately starts off the orchestra with his trademark high hat intro before shouting "One, Two, Three". The orchestra is driven by Rich forcefully forward and they play tight. Amazingly, there is an absence of drum solos, but that in no way takes away from this long-awaited recording of the mercurial band leader and the genius that was Buddy Rich. He is missed by many and this CD is pure Joy!
bad liner notes
a must for buddy rich collectors. great to hear tracks that were not recorded in the past, but were heard at buddys live concerts.
too bad greater care was not put into the liner notes and song titles
for example listing a trombone soloist, who is not listed on the track as part of the 3 man trombone section. also the track entitled "senator sam"
is not the same track as on the "roar of 74 cd" in fact it is titled "
unidentified blues" on the "europe 1977" cd
drummer/BR fan
This is a great recording of done in the late 70's. Not to be missed.
